About Samothrace Natura 2000 Protected Area

The Samothrace Natura 2000 Protected Area encompasses the entire island of Samothrace, located in the northern Aegean Sea. This protected network aims to preserve the island's valuable habitats and species under the European Union’s Natura 2000 framework. Samothrace is characterized by its dramatic terrain, with Mount Fengari (also called Saos) rising to 1,611 meters, the highest peak in the northern Aegean. The area boasts varied habitats including dense pine and oak forests, alpine meadows, rocky cliffs, and freshwater streams. These habitats support several protected plants and animal species, such as the Balkan chamois, griffon vultures, and a diverse array of amphibians and butterflies. Historically, Samothrace was famed for the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, a significant religious site in antiquity, adding cultural interest to the natural landscape. Outdoor enthusiasts visit the area for hiking, birdwatching, and exploring waterfalls and traditional villages. The island’s network of trails includes routes leading to scenic viewpoints, waterfalls, and archaeological sites. The natural environment provides key refuge for migratory birds, enhanced by its maritime location. Samothrace’s protected status under Natura 2000 helps maintain the ecological integrity of this important Mediterranean island, offering visitors a blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage in a largely unspoiled setting.
